Blake and Zack helped Marcie and Brian celebrate her graduation from college.

It was a picture perfect day in Logan Utah on May 7, 2011 when Marcie graduated.

Cap and gown look good on you, Marcie.

There were days this past year that Brian truly carried Marcie. Thanks to you, Brian.

You are a georgous graduate, Marcie.

Marcie's "golden" birthday. She turned 25 on the 25th. She and her handsome husband, Brian came for dinner.

Brian's sweet Mom baked her a personal size cake. We added candles, lit them, and viola , a birthday party.

Cafe Sabor

We had a wonderful time in Logan. Megan and I went to a preschool workshop, Brian did some aerating, Mike went on a scout camp out, Peter and Abby had a soccer game, and we met at our favorite restaurant Cafe Sabor for fajita burritos. Our grandchildren were so good. They had smart parents who allowed them to bring their own lunch and toys.

It couldn't get any better: good food and good company.

Marcie called it "linner" because we went at 3:30 in the afternoon. We had the restaurant and parking lot to ourselves, side-by-side.

We enjoyed ourselves as much outside.

Marcie was the life of the party with the grandchildren. They didn't want her to leave.

Thanks Marcie for getting me out of my non-post slump by asking for pictures.

Grandkids are as wonderful as they say they are

Peter, Abby, and Brooke get to stay at our home 10 glorious days. Glorious for the grandparents.Thursday the temperature was in the high 60's, and Friday the low 70's. They were hot and suggested great ideas to cool off. "Eat ice cream". So we did.

Brooke spilled ice cream on Sally the dog, and her diaper.

"...and Grandpa put water on the slide, so we can get wet as we slide down." Of course, that is exactly what he did.

We were full and drenched, but had lots of laughs.

Salads and such

Because it was difficult to get fresh lettuce in Samoa, I have been making salads like crazy since we got home. My favorites have iceberg and romaine lettuce, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, mushrooms, snow peas, mangoes or strawberries. The guys like to add sunflower seeds on top.

Instead of tossing them, I cut everything first, tear the lettuce (don't cut), and layer them from the bottom to the top.

I couldn't resist adding a fruit bowl. Strawberries are in season, and they are scrumptious.

My sweet sister-in-law Annette, gave me the recipe for the best home-made Ranch Dressing.

Ranch Dressing

4 oz. of buttermilk

4 oz. cream cheese

3/4 cup of mayonnaise

1 tsp. each: onion salt, garlic salt, pepper, and MSG (Accent)

Mix in a blender.

It is delicious.

Sweet Marcie (Brian, you can read it too.) Almost two months ago, I commented on this wonderful book. After my husband finished it, I would send it to someone who recommending a book for me to read. I though this would be a grand way to meet you who look at my blog. Yea, for Marcie. When she found out that no one responded, she did, so she wins the treasure. Plus it's a great book. Our favorite son, Andrew had a birthday yesterday. Ashley helped us celebrate.

He blew out the candles on his birthday brownies.

When you turn 30, candles put out a LOT of smoke.

I found out his friends said he made it to the 3rd floor - which means 30.

He built his tower to the sky,

as Ashley cheered him on.

Marcie got the cereal out when we came home. She eats her cereal by pouring the milk in FIRST, adding a layer of cereal on top, eat the cereal, pour another layer, eat, and pour; until the milk is gone.

Brian filled his bowl to the MAX. I don't think another single cheerio would fit.

I then watched Danny eat his cereal from a glass cup.

Dawson is Awesome

How important is it to be able to READ? The sign is outside our public library.

A highlight of Monday and Wednesday is that Dawson comes to our house. For the last month I have been tutoring him in reading.

The best thing about Dawson is his great attitude.

The last sight word for him to master was R-E-A-D. Last week I told him about the sign at the library. Before he came on Monday he told his mom to drive by the library so he could learn his last word. She did, and he did.

He truly brightens my day. Yea! Today is Wednesday, and Dawson is coming.

Robin Red breast

This robin enjoyed the berries from our backyard trees. If anyone knows the name of these of trees, please tell me. I thought they were crab apple, but the berries are smaller.

In the Spring they blossom out with the most beautiful fuchsia flowers, dark green leaves in the summer, red leaves in the fall and berries just in time for Christmas. By spring all the berries are eaten by the birds. I can't think of a better way to enjoy the seasons than from our kitchen window.

Brian's Ryan

Lawn aeration removes small soil plugs from lawns to improve soil drainage and encourage worms, micro flora and fauna. I'm excited about the worms. Brian, our great son-in-law owns a Ryan Aerator - therefore Brian's Ryan.

He served with a smile.

He has strong muscles to maneuver that machine. I know, I tried to push it.

He surprised us. What a wonderful surprise. I just love it when someone surprises us by aerating our lawn.

When he finished, he drove it up the ramp onto his truck, and off he went to surprise and make more people happy. Thanks Brian.

Alex's family had a relative die from childhood cancer. His family wanted to help. Last weekend he and his brothers went to a "shave store" and had their hair cut off to increase childhood cancer awareness, and raise funds to benefit research.

Alex came to preschool today, and let everyone feel his head.

Weddings and Anniversaries

Yesterday our sweet niece Heather married Ryker, her sweetheart. What a beautiful bride and handsome groom.

March 12 marked a new life for them.

I reflected on the day before; March 11- our anniversary. We forgot. It was only after someone asked me the date, that I remembered, but I couldn't remember how long.

Tanna, our 32 year old daughter reminded us. "You have been married 33 years." Cause to celebrate.

We bought two new PILLOWS. What a way to begin another 33 glorious years.

Hopefully we can make it 66.

Heart goes out to Japan

With the news of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan; we remember the one that hit September 29, 2009 in Samoa while we served our mission. It was devastating; thousands lost their homes, and over 130 lost their lives.

The missionaries went back to check their home and chapel that was destroyed.

They watched the damage of the tsunami waves from the hill behind their home.

Businesses and people were very helpful with food, water, and manpower.

We realized how helpless we are; how much we need our Heavenly Father; and how much he truly does love and care for us.

Our hearts go out to those in Japan. We will pray for them, and give donations to help.

The cloud bears had a pillow fight

Oh, it snowed last night, it snowed last night. March definitely has lamb and lion days. Monday evening it snowed for hours. We woke to a beautiful morning of white covering the ground. By Wednesday afternoon all the snow was gone.

Josh teaches us tons

We teach a missionary preparation class at 7:30 a.m., and Sunday School for the young single adults in our ward each Sunday. Josh comes to both, is always prompt, has autism, participates and teaches US in EVERY class. We talked about personal and companionship study as a missionary. L. Tom Perry said, "having two sets of eyes examine the doctrine of the kingdom seemed to multiply our understanding." Josh raised his hand and added that his family studies 'Preach My Gospel' for Family Home Evening. What a great family he has.

In Sunday School class a young lady sat with her arms folded. Josh sensed that she was cold, stood up, and placed his jacket over her shoulders. Our lesson purpose was "to help class members understand that as we take the Savior's yoke upon us and do his will, we will find the peace and joy that he has promised." Josh demonstrated this for us by his actions.

We love this young man, and are so blessed (manuia in Samoan).

Best Nursery Leader

We got a call from our children's first nursery leader from about 25 years ago. She has cancer, is in a rehabilitation center, and wanted us to come visit. Bonnie was so eager to see us. She has never married, and doesn't have much family around.

Ethel ate her meals by Bonnie. She was 86 and going home in a few days.

Thayle also ate at her table. These ladies were delightful. We came away feeling so great. Why do I always wait to do things that make me feel so good?

Pillows Talk

Last Fall my good friend Barb let me enjoy all of her old quilt magazines. I found this great pattern in Quiltmaker Sept/Oct 2008 to covered our travel pillows. The pattern is made of arrows going around in a circle. What goes around comes around, and that is true too, when we travel or go on missions.

I used the last of my scraps of fabric I had on our mission.

Last week I was in the mood to do something with my hands, yet full size quilts were a bit too much to tackle right now, so I though of pillows.

I got my fabric, ironed, and cut out. It felt so good to use my rotary cutter, but when it came time to sew, my machine had troubles. After an hour, and magic from my husband, I was back in business.

I decided to make a pillow case (so it can be removed and washed), because what women think are 'decorative' men think are 'functional'. These pillows are so tempting to prop under your head and watch a game on T.V

I gave it to my beautiful niece, Heather

who is getting married next week.

The Silver Pickle

My sweet friend Lori, made me a beautiful personalized necklace. She is so talented - mine has a flower, hearts with a "j" and "d" on each, a pearl to show them off, and "I like us." The "d" is for Danny, whom I love dearly. I laughed because he thought "j" was for Jean and "d" was for DaBell. "I like us" includes you. I like all of us.

Lori has an email address and site to see her work. I highly recommend it. She can personalize your jewelry in so many ways. I can't believe the possibilities.

We shared Samoa with Diane's Study group

Danny's mom Diane belongs to a Study Group. These junior high, high school, and college friends have been getting together once a month for over 50 years to study the gospel.

We shared our wonderful Samoan mission experiences with them.

Twenty-two friends from 80-85 years old met at Diane's home Friday at 1:00 p.m.

Many were missionaries in their youth, some as senior couples. Bro. Luddington served in England as a young missionary and in 2005 went back with his wife to serve again.

We displayed information and treasures from our mission.

We were so impressed with their delight in seeing one another. They came all dressed up from 40 miles away.

They had so much fun socializing.

They told jokes, stories, and shared love one for another.

I just loved being in their presence.

I felt their goodness and wisdom that comes with years of making right choices.

There were so many smiles and laughter.

Some still hunt, hike and garden. They enjoyed treats, talking, and time together.

We shared Samoa with them; but they shared so much with us. We learned about growing old and certainly how to "endure to the end." What a manuia blessed day we had.

Indoor or Outdoor?

A few years ago our town South Jordan finished this great aquatic pool.

It's LARGE with a water slide, splash area, lap swimming, toys for children to climb on, and a separate kiddie pool.

As I looked at the pool, I thought how wonderful it was for families to come inside and swim while it was cold and snowy outside. Of course, my thoughts then turned to Samoa where the temperature is 80 degree all the time, their inside is outside and outside is inside. On the island of Tutuila the most beautiful beach was secluded Larsen's Bay.

There are no water slides, lap pools, toys for children to play on...

...or are there? We found plenty to do. We could swing from the banana trees,

jump from lava rocks,

run our feet through soft white sand,

and discover critters.

We didn't have to worry about being too cold.

I even discovered natural art - decomposing leaves,

and Matthew found roots to hang from.

So I think I will take OUTDOOR, ANY DAY.

Cooking is NOT my thing

In preparation to take dinner to someone, I took a roast from the freezer, placed it in the sink to defrost for a few hours before I went to bed. My plan was to move it from the sink to the fridge overnight, and slow cook it the next day. You guessed it! I forgot all about it until the next morning. The roast went from the freezer, to the sink, to the garbage can. Wouldn't that be terrible to get a sick person sicker; all because of my cooking. I made chicken soup instead, with homemade rolls.Rolls can't be that hard. I mixed the dough, let it raise (oops, I almost forgot AGAIN), rolled out the dough, and baked them. Ta da!

They did look nice; but when I went to put the recipe for my blog I realized I forgot the powdered milk. I would much rather sew a quilt. With sewing, I have something to show for my efforts and I can't kill anyone with the results.

I do like my Crescent Rolls when I pay attention:

3/4 cup dry powdered milk

1/3 cup shortening

1/3 cup sugar

2 tsp. salt

3 cups hot tap water

3 eggs

8-9 cups flour

2 Tbsp. instant yeast

Put milk, shortening, sugar, salt, and hot water in a bowl. Mix together. Add 4 cups of the flour, eggs, and yeast. Mix well until smooth. Add the remainder of the flour little by little as it is mixing. Knead 4-5 minutes. Let raise until double. Divide into fourths. Roll each portion into a circle. Spread melted button on top. Cut like a pizza into 12 sections. Roll from big end to small. Place on a greased pan. Let raise again until double. Bake at 370 degrees for 9-11 minutes.

We finished our 300 piece United States puzzle.

Peter created a crazy monster with Marcie.

I love my sweet grandchildren.

Abby helped wash the dishes.

Brooke would not give a smile; which made us smile more.

We soaked the back off a postage stamp from Grandpa's mission to Australia.

Peter and Abby picked a stamp they put in his collection book.

On to the next project in a jiffy - play clay.

My favorite play clay recipe.

1 cup white flour

1/4 cup salt

1 cup water

1 tbsp cream of tartar

2 tbsp cooking oil

food coloring (if desired)

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. After several minutes the gooey mixture will eventually form a ball. Remove from the pan. Cool.

I don't usually add food coloring - it's like playing with snow.

The best part of the day - sit in bed and read favorite picture books.

Preschool, Puzzles Plus

Dinner time was the best. EVERYTHING tasted good, dipped in ketchup AND ranch dressing.

Abby and Brooke mopped the garage floor before preschool.

Potato heads -out of control.

Barbies too - were everywhere.

Brooke played Barbies with the 'older' girls.

Then the fun began. We had chocolate milk, string cheese, and oranges.

Peter taught us how to blow bubbles in our milk.

Peter teased Brooke over and over. She laughed, Peter laughed, and we laughed. This was the BEST entertainment.

Thursday was puzzle night. We put them together, and made up stories.

Most Pleasant Pajama Party

The best part of being back from our mission is - grandchildren. We had a pajama party tonight with Peter, Abby, and Brooke who get to stay with us until Saturday. Life doesn't get any better.

ME (in my dreams) Have you ever thought of an animal you would like to be? I would like the arms of an octopus and the tail of a monkey - and call myself an Octokey. Just think of the possibilities; I could carry so many things and swing myself from place to place.

I feel so satisfied when I do two, three, or more things at once. At the gym I love to work out, AND read my Ensign, book, and even have pen and paper to jot inspiration down when it comes. I must be ready when those endorphins spark my creativity.

I turned the page and tried to readjust my paper clips and rubber bands to hold open my book. A rubber band flew out of my hands, off the balcony to the front desk below. Raining rubber bands. Where are my extra arms and tail when I need them?

Philatelist, and much more

Last Friday we went to see DuVall's. As you can see by their name it is kind of like ours.
*we rhyme
*we both have two capitol letters
*we both end with double 'l'.
We are thrilled to have something in common with this wonderful couple we have been friends with for six years. Sister DuVall showed us a beautiful amaryllis that her daughter gave her. One stock had four blooms and now the second stock has two flowers with two more to come. She got me excited by explaining that after it has bloomed, you can put it in a cool dry place, and next fall begin to water it; and it will bloom all over again. I wonder if it is too late find these bulbs.

It is because of Sister DuVall I got the great idea on our mission to collect cancelled postage stamps for our grandson Peter, who was only six at the time. We asked all the missionaries to save us their stamps. We sent them to Peter, who was excited for the hobby. He got many stamps including some from South America, islands of the South Pacific, New Zealand, and Australia.

Sister DuVall said recently three people have given her their collections. She has thousands of stamps that she has been collecting for 30-40 years. She wanted to share her stamps with someone to help others get started.

She did just that. Now Peter, who will be eight this year; has quite a start.

The pile of stamps have just been soaked off the envelope, and are ready to be put into books.

The best part of watching DuVall's is their love they show for each other. She is 86, he 95. We went with her to the care home that her husband just recently moved to. She had in her hands a few letters to read to him, and Rummikub. They have played a game or two every day of their married life (to keep their minds active). They were so tender and cute to watch. I really do want to grow up and be like them.

What an inspiration they are to us. They are living examples of 'enduring to the end'. Their testimonies of our Savior Jesus Christ and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is real and strong.

She gave me my most favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe. I made homemade soap with her. She sews, quilts, bottles tomato and grape juice and jam every year. When we finished our Inner City Salt Lake City Mission she gave us a queen size quilt which she made. EVERYTHING she does is exciting, fun, and fulfilling.

I am still on a 'natural high' from being in their presence last weekend. They make me want to be a better person.

Caddie Woodlawn

I just finished a delightful book: Caddie Woodlawn, which I would like to share with you. Please give me a suggestion of a book I might read next. If I choose to read yours, I will give you my copy of this book. I don't like to collect things. My husband is reading it; so just as soon as he is finished the contest is over. Caddie is brave, and her story is special because it's based on the life and memories of Carol Ryrie Brink's grandmother, the real Caddie Woodlawn.
This Newberry Medal book was originally published in 1935.

Carl Heinrich Bloch's Art Exhibit

Friday, we went for the second time to see Carl Heinrich Bloch: The Master's Hand exhibition at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art. Carl Heinrich Bloch is one of the best-known Danish artist of his time. He was born May 23, 1834 in Copenhagen. His work includes over 250 paintings and 78 etchings in his lifetime. He was commissioned to paint 23 canvases for Frederiksborg Castle depicting the life of Christ. He died of cancer at the age of 55.

After our mission I decided to rename our blog. I wanted the name to include everything about our lives. After MUCH contemplation I came up with some possibilities:

jinglebells.blogspot.com (It rhymes with my name) Not available

allthingsjean.blogspot.com (Mike thought of this one) Not available

l-m-n-o-preschool-quilts-running with a shovel.blogspot.com Available (but highly discouraged by my family) They laughed out loud when I mentioned it. How dare they laugh. I put a lot of thought into this - my jogging and dosing off to sleep time coming up with this name. It reflected my enthusiasm for preschool, quilts, running 10K races, and gardening.

"Oh, it needs to be simple so others can remember it?" Well my family did remember it; because they teased me about it all the next day. It is one of those blog names you can't forget.

Finally Marcie asked, "Why do you want to change it anyway?" I couldn't come up with a reason. I love Samoa. We are who we are because of our mission. So bring it on: GIMMESAMOA Gimme more and more Samoa. We will keep the name.

THE MONTH AFTER CHRISTMAS

As we begin a New Year and January ends; I leave you with this thought.

'Twas the month after Christmas, and all through the house

Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.

The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste

At holiday parties had gone to my waist.

When I got on the scales, there arose such a number!

When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber),

I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared;

The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared,

The cake and the rumballs, the bread and the cheese

And the way that I'd never said, "no thank you, please."

As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt

And prepared once again to do battle with dirt,

I said to myself, as I only can

"You can't spend a winter disguised as a man!"

So - away with the last of the sour cream dip,

Get rid of the fruitcake, every cracker and chip,

Every last bit of food that I like must be banished

'Tis all the additional ounces have vanished.

I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie,

I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.

I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore -

Welcome 2011

First annual poetry night; last Friday in January

Andrew read his poem about Jimmer. He didn't have a poem until he went to BYU's basketball game and heard the one he wanted to share.

Friday evening we held our first annual poetry night. Blake helped me peel the carrots for our soup. The idea came when we were attended Ta'iala Academy's delightful poetry night in Samoa. I thought, "What a way to spend dreary winter nights, memorizing a favorite poem". We announced the date to our family back home - last Friday in January.

We gathered for dinner, and enjoyed catching up on old times after our year and a half gap.

We enjoyed eating, feeding, watching, and talking.

Grandchildren ARE as great as they say they are

We have had such FUN tending our grandchildren. When we went out, we did have more stuff to load: car seats, diapers, blankets, toys, coats, and drinks. BUT it was all worth it.

As I shopped, Grandpa followed them around the store. They bounced on the furniture and told me that he let them touch things. I had warned them, "not to touch", as we entered. Grandpa later said to me, "I told them they had to keep their feet OFF the couches." While I finished they got an ice cream, and of course, played.

I put them down for a nap and checked on them after it finally became quiet. Both boys got a teddy bear. Blake fell asleep on the floor and Zack was upside down in bed.

The best part was snuggling in bed reading stories. Life couldn't get better.

Salt Lake versus Samoa

Monday, the snow finally melted. I went outside to shovel up all the dog poop from our dog which had not been picked up in a l o n g time. Just after Christmas it snowed and the temperature stayed below freezing for a month. The next morning, it snowed again.

I began to think of Samoa. It isn't hard. Danny asked me, "How often do you think of our mission?" I replied, "Do you mean, how many times each day?"

This sweet lady recently got baptized.

Children and adults don't have to wear much to stay warm, or is it cool? (It's hard to remember being hot, because I am FREEZING.)

Bananas grow YEAR ROUND.

The two don't have much in common, if you compare weather. However, the affinity is that we call both places HOME; because we love you in both places.

I posted this chapter because of Shauna. After church she asked if I had written anything since our mission. "No, I am busy, I don't know where to begin, I don't know what to say, I haven't been taking pictures, I am six weeks behind, our life doesn't compare to our mission." Is that enough excuses? I said to myself, "just do it, just do something." So I set a goal: by the end of Monday night, enter a post. We visited Matilda before she left Utah to travel back to Falenu in Tutuila. We love her.

Tasi (center) was in our Mesepa Internation Ward in American Samoa. We got to meet two of her daughters. She is one of the kindest people we know.

"Matthew and Jessica, look we are playing dominoes all by ourselves, and we remembered the rules. We wish you were here to play with us."

We told several families all about Samoa and our mission during Family Home Evenings. These sweet young boys tried on our missionary tags. They will have their own in a few short years.

Our sweet Marcie got married while we were on our mission. She is a lovely wife.

It has been wonderful visiting our family. Danny, our daughter Megan and son-in-law Mike, and Danny's mother, Diane.

I began preschool again. I LOVE TEACHING PRESCHOOL. We had a great time in the cold snow. I haven't experienced this in almost two years.

It is just plain hard to express all the feelings of our heart. It is pulled and twisted all over the place. We loved our mission in Samoa. The people we met are dear to us, and have changed our lives forever, for good. We too, are excited to be home because this is where our family is.

Our mission has been fun and challenging, easy and hard, fast and slow; but most definitely rewarding. We have come to know our Savior Jesus Christ better; and this has been worth all the time and effort we have put forth.

We are forever grateful for this chapter in our lives, Mission is Samoa. We will miss the sound of geckos, chickens, and rain pounding on our roof. We will miss the blue and white kingfisher that perched on the wire outside our window whenever it rained, fruit bats flying in the early evening, and bright red and black cardinal honeyeaters fluttering about. We will miss the fragrance of a freshly picked gardenia and lemon from our yard. We will miss the strange sensation that we need to start swimming when we step outside where the humidity is high, the constant shuffle of flip-flops, the sei's that adorn Samoan ladies black hair, the aroma of an umu, the handsome fa'i pula, breadfruit, and taro. We will miss Samoan smiles and "O a mai oe?" from others including those we don't even know.

We will miss Institute, Epikopo Aiono, Kathy, and our students in class , their love and kindness they have shown us. Studying the gospel in preparation to teach penetrated our minds and hearts with truth in a way that could not have been possible otherwise. We will miss our daily interaction with the missionaries. We add them to our one son, Andrew, we counted as we came. We are leaving with many.

We will always remember and never forget our Mesepa International Ward, neighbors, and friends, we have come to know in the last 18 months. Just like the songs says, because I knew you, I have been changed for good." We may not see some of them again until we are reunited in the next life.

We know that Jesus Christ is our Savior, that his gospel, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been restored to the earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith. We know Thomas S. Monson is our living prophet on the earth today to guide us back to live with our Heavenly Father.

Books for Matatula School

Elder DaBell picked up 20 large priority boxes from the post office.

It took several loads to get them into the van.

The postal inspector, and others helped. Each box weighed 20 pounds.

I organized. Actually I just looked and enjoyed.

Inside each box were books: children's picture books, youth chapter books, non-fiction books; all in great condition from Justin Sanders and his scout troop.

After the tsunami September 2009, Justin and his mother, Kimberly, a teacher wanted to help. With the help of our ward scout troop in South Jordan Utah, they collected 400 pounds of new and used books. The scouts then mowed lawns to earn the $300 to mail them here.

It truly was a miracle. They ALL arrived in one week.

Matatula Elementary School on the east side of the island was hit by the tsunami. The teachers and administrators acted quickly when the village bell rang at 6:45 a.m., ushering the children up the hill to safety. No one was hurt, unlike other schools. However, their school was damaged, with water, sand, and sea life left in their classrooms. Missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were the first to arrive and help with the cleanup.

For weeks the school was closed. When they reopened, supplies including books to read were all destroyed. Portable classrooms were brought in.

The East Zone Missionaries helped us deliver the books.

We all helped with the boxes. Elder Davidson (zone leader), Nielsen, Ilo, DaBell, Memea, and Laulu.

Even our sweet new daughter, Jessica Hyde came to help.

I showed the Principal, Ms. Tala a few of the books including one of my favorites One Morning in Maine.

After we took the boxes into the office, we moved them to the library. Elder Asaasa was so pleasant (with only four a's in his name).

Everyone grabbed another box - Elder Ilo Leaga included.

Two sweet students helped and giggled all the way.

To the library we went. Principal Ms. Tala (hat) and the librarians were so appreciative of the books. Publicly they thanked Heavenly Father for our help and goodness. They recognized our church for being the first to help after their disaster.

The books will make a great addition to the school.

We took away warm memories of the day. Fa'afetai tele lava Thank you very much Justin, scouts, and the missionaries. A job well done.

Falesa (chapels)

There are 18 falasa meeting houses for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Amerika Samoa. As you will see, the buildings are varied; one houses a small Branch, while another has two chapels for two Stakes. In every building the Sacrament is blessed and passed each week; and you can feel the Spirit of our Heavenly Father.The first shall be last, and the last shall be first - even with chapels. We have been here almost 18 months and just last week, we learned of another falesa. Hence we discovered it last, yet it is first in the post. In Afono the branch of the church meets in a members home. We didn't know where it was, but as we drove into the village we stopped these two cute girls. Titanic (green), was born when the movie came out, hence her name; and Marina (red), took us to the home/church , where Marina lives. How would you like to live in the church?

The Tulao ward meet in this building - a combined congregation from the villages of Alao and Tula.

This beautiful building in Auto is two stories with the chapel upstairs. We attended a baptism with the windows open. We could feel the ocean breeze, hear birds chirping, and see fruit bats flying.

I don't know the name of this plant - but I love the leaves speckled with white and pink. We watched this plant grow from a tiny start over a year ago, into this beautiful healthy bush.

Falesa Number 5

Most chapels have courtyards like this one in Aua.

Pua flowers are one of the most common, showing their cheery faces everywhere.

Falesa Number 6 Vatia, a tiny village on the north side.

This falesa was hit hard by the tsunami. The windows broke and sand and water filled the building; but the structure stood firm.

Falesa Number 7 in Pago Pago was also hit by the tsunami on September 29, 2009. This boat was washed ashore and delivered in the front yard. This chapel was without electricity for 6 months. Today it still has temporary chairs in the chapel, while the church trys to purchase land further inland to build another stake center.

We waited in the chapel for a baptismal service to begin.

Beautiful flower arrangements decorate the chapels every week. This might be one of those 'scratch-n-sniff' pictures. Try it!

Falesa Number 8 - Fagasa Village

This congregation feels like they are outside, with just a roof over their heads. The netting is put up to keep the dogs out when church is not being held.

Falesa Number 9 Nu'uuli Chapel

Vanessa just got baptized and her 2 year old son. A co-worker gave her a copy of the Book of Mormon. She quickly read it, prayed, and knew it was true. She called her good friend who is a member of our church, and said, "I want to talk to you about the Book of Mormon." Her friend was off island. Everyday, for a week Vanessa called to see when her friend would return. A week later she did return, and introduced her to the full time missionaries. They taught Vanessa sometimes on her lunch break and within three weeks she was baptized.

Falesa Number 11 - Malaeimi. This chapel is the most central on the island, the largest, with two chapels, five church units housing two stakes: Pago Central and Mapusaga. Last November 2009 President Uchtdorf spoke here.

Ola and her wonderful family came every day to clean up the church.

One day we found this darling primary choir in the back parking lot practicing for President Uchtdorf's visit.

Just the leaves can make beautiful arrangements.

Falesa Number 12 - Mesepa Village. This is where we teach Institute, across the street from our home.

Genesis and Fale served on the Institute Council 2009. Fale is now serving his mission in Las Vegas Spanish speaking.

We love Sister Maua'i and Toleafoa. They taught these youth who got baptized.

Falesa Number 13 - Mekeke Village

This beautiful chape,l one of the newest on the island was finished a few years ago. It sits at the end of 1/2 mile dirt road in the Tongan village where two wards and a branch meet.

Elders Funaki and Vaenuku, in front of their home, which is beside the church. These Tongan Elders have the opportunity to serve in the Tongan village speaking their native language. They know Samoan, Tongan, and English - wow! trilingual.

The missionaries were treated in Faleniu to a delicious Samoan meal after zone conference.

We took pictures of the tapa clothes so we could remember their interesting designs and patterns.

The chapels and courtyards are beautiful. We have attended baptisms at almost all of these.

Falesa Number 16 - Pava'ia'i where we attend church. This has been our home ward for 1 1/2 years. It is also home to the Pago West Stake.

We love to visit after church. No one seems to be in any hurry to leave.

This sight is not unusual. It rained so hard, the courtyard was filled with water.

This father got baptized after the tsunami, because he re-evaluated his life, and wanted to be ready to meet the Savior.

Falesa Number 18 - Amanave Village. The congregation met in the downstairs of this home. The tsunami hit, they moved to a tent while they restored the home, then back again. A family has since moved in the home, and the Sunday School under the direction of the Mission, meet in a home behind. Notice the cement pad in front where a home used to sit.

We went with Elders Johnson and Tolley to set the chairs up for church on Sunday.

Three people from BYU-Hawaii came to encourage Institute students to come to the University. Rebecca, Aarpata, and John traveled around the South Pacific Islands educating youth of the many scholarships, grants, and I-Work programs available so they can attend higher education at Brigham Young University - Hawaii.

Fua invited us to her home.

She teaches marketing classes at the American Samoa Community College. In her home she sell ladies clothing and shoes, and has a picture of the temple displayed to remind those who shop to dress modestly so we can attend the temple.

Many who shop are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints; and she talks freely about our church and beliefs.

Sandals are a delightful change from usual flip-flops or slippers (se'evae) as they call them.

She sells skirts, blouses, and dresses, of all sizes.

After I enjoyed her shop, the young elders arrived for dinner. Her husband, Fia; a chef by profession, cooked us a delicious Samoan meal. We had a great time visiting and eating...

ham, chicken, shrimp, rice, taro, breadfruit, macaroni salad, and pineapple pie for dessert.

I love laundry

I love laundry hanging out to dry. I love the stiffness of sun dried clothes. I love to see white shirts hanging in a row.

I love to see colors, shapes, and sizes. I get ideas for quilts from laundry on the line.

If you run out of line - the car will do.

You can learn so much from clothes on a line; for example - how windy it is.

...how many people in the house,

...and colors they like.

Who wouldn't want to hang their clothes out; when you are surrounded by a paradise garden.

This family is quite well off - a washer, hot water heater, and...

...they hang their clothes under the eves. What a blessing, because it rains without notice.

Elder Tauali'i completed his mission with honor. What an exemplary young man.

Green stuff has the potential to grow on anything not in motion. These shoes were found outside a missionary fale house. My advice: keep walking.

THE only recipe I brought

Ever since Sister DuVall gave me this chocolate chip cookie recipe, I have used none other. I didn't know if I could get ingredients but I brought it anyway. Shortly after arriving, sweet friends from home sent us a care package with the magic ingredients - chocolate chips and coconut cream instant jello pudding. We have since found they are available here - especially the coconut cream pudding. We should have know: a tropical paradise with coconut trees. They love anything with coconut.

We found another MUST in the recipe - New Zealand butter. Umm, umm good!

I mix the dough, and freeze a few rolled balls in each bag. When Elder DaBell wants cookies, he pops those babies onto a cookie sheet, puts them in the oven, and viola piping hot cookies right from the oven. He's happy, I'm happy.

Now you too can throw all your old recipes away and use

Sister DuVall's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Mix all together:

1 cup buttered, softened

1/2 cup sugar

3/4 cup brown sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp. vanilla

Mix in:

2 1/2 cups flour

1 tsp. baking soda

Then add:

1 (3.4 oz) package coconut cream jello instant pudding

1 12 oz. package chocolate chips

1 cup chopped nuts

Roll into 1"-1 1/2" balls making 3 1/2 - 4 dozen cookies. Bake 350 degrees for 15 minutes (from the freezer) or 13-14 minutes if dough is fresh.

Nu'uuli - We met Lynn (center) and her sweet highschool friends waiting for the bus.

Peter's place - We said good-bye to Sweet Terri. She went to University of Hawaii to get her master's degree. She is one of the sweetest ladies I have ever know.

Judith's place - She just had a sweet new baby Allison. Her husband Jessie is a fisherman, and came home a few days after Allison was born.

Flower shop - This sweet lady is very impressed with the young Mormon Missionaries. "They help people where ever they go. I saw some in the hospital that were interpreting for a patient and doctor. They sure can speak Samoan."

Equator Restaurant - Bobbie (left) worked at SPEX Airlines, and now is at the Equator. She and the other lady (right) served us a delicious meal at our mission conference.

Europa bore his testimony to Jonnie. He too, is a great missionary; and he may not even realize it.

Fagasa - We love being here.

Papaya grow in the center of the tree. They are most delicious with lemon juice. Try it, you'll like it.

Who needs flowers in a flower arrangement. Sugar cane added to leaves made a beautiful sight.

Palm trees are sooooo TALL.

Our new van holds the missionaries packages very nicely. Are we in the postal service,...or what? We are professionals. We know how to box, package, and tape perfectly. When we return home we will send our Sweet Niece Nicole in Nicaragua (that's a tongue twister) some wonderful care packages while she serves her mission.

We would love to build a room like this at the Malaeimi Chapel which is 22' X 44'. We are already dreaming of preschool, quilting classes, Thanksgiving feasts, ping-pong tournaments and gingerbread decorating. What socials we will host!

We had an assignment that took us to the 'Office of Vital Statistics.'

Next to the palm tree, is a 'ulu breadfruit tree. Breadfruit is a staple in the Samoan diet, like our potato. About ten years ago, Pres. Hinckley blessed this land; that the breadfruit would produce all year long if they stayed righteous. It does. Someone from Fiji told us, in their country breadfruit ripens in seasons.

Samoan children are so happy and fun loving.

This darling girl in a Pago Pago ward was at a baptism we attended.

These cute girls played a game with five rocks each. It's like 'jacks', but the ball is a rock, and you throw it up, collect the other rocks, and catch it before it hits the ground.

The door to the stairs made me laugh.

These flowers and leaves are found on the island, and most women know how to make floral arrangements. Every Saturday the roadside stands sell arrangements to decorate the churches on Sunday.

The nets are repaired in this fishing yard. My Mother-In-Law grows these trees INSIDE her home.

Samoan people go to church on Sunday. Many religions - many churches.

This sweet lady weeded the flower garden at the airport and stopped us to say Talofa.

He is ready to cut the grass. They use weed line trimmers, because the ground is uneven, and a mower would never survive. When there is no cloud cover, it gets very hot and you must cover yourself from the pounding sun.

He too, is protecting himself from the hot sun - a box as a hat. We have seen people shade themselves from the sun with an umbrella, hat, shirt, lava lava, cardboard box, leaf, and a backpack.

After we discussed in Institute how powerful the sun is - especially in Samoa; we read Doctrine and Covenantants 88:7. Jesus Christ..."Is in the sun, and the light of the sun, and the power thereof by which it was made." We worship The Son Jesus Christ more, because we witness the power of the sun.

This gas station is selling cheap gas...

and brooms for sale. I love these brooms for decoration; but they use them to sweep the leaves and grass in their yards. They work very well.

The banyan tree died, yet the trunk remains. Young banyan tree roots grow down the host tree towards the ground. The roots grow and tighten around the host tree and eventually engulf it completely.

Elder DaBell and I ran into Luavalu (left) and his friend in Vatia. Luavalu is in our Institute classes and leaving in October for a mission to the Philippines. The Laufala plant in the foreground is used by women to weave fine mats.

What an outing. We also ran into Loralei. She was in our Institute class a year ago. Since she married, and is expecting a new baby next month. She showed us the trail head to hike Mt. Alava from Vatia.

We do have such fun. Who is "King of the Hill?" Luavalu escorted us to Vaiava Strait to view Pola Island. It was magnificent.

Time to Travel and a Time to Teach

Last week we noticed a HUGE cruise ship in the Pago Harbor. Tourists were everywhere. Some explained to us that they had been on the ship for almost four months and were headed home to New Zealand or Australia. They cruised to Egypt, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and everywhere in between. As we drove home to Mesepa from Pago I reflected on their experiences vs. our experiences as missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Samoa. Our mission cost less, last longer (18 months vs. 4 months), and will have a greater eternal significance in our lives. Traveling is fun. We traveled to Samoa; got to know the people better as we lived among them and taught Institute; and more importantly; got to know our Savior Jesus Christ in a more personal and intimate way. For this we am eternally grateful.

Aunu'u Island

Isaac, Moroni, and Elder DaBell - Moroni showed us the island he grew up on.

In Tula, on his family land, he used the ladder to harvest coconuts. I am sure he could climb the tree just a few years ago.

These are the niu coconuts. The meat is very thin, and the coconut is filled with a delicious drink.

On a hot Samoan day, what a refreshment.

On to his next demonstration. With a stick...

and a few blows to the coconut, the husk came off. He made it look so easy.

When you have too many coconuts, pull some of the strands of the husk, tie them together, and haul them over a stick to carry home.

Off he goes, to take his coconuts home. They make palasami, a delicious food of the coconut cream wrapped in leaves, and eaten with taro or breadfruit. Umm, umm, good!

Next -a woven basket.We felt like we were at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Moroni, Isaac, Pike, went with us to the small island Aunu'u (less than two square miles), where the first missionaries arrived. Tutuila is in the background, as we got off the small boat that took us across.

Pike and I stood by the sign that welcomed us to Aunu'u Island (less than 500 people).

Do I look like I live on a tropical island, OR WHAT?

This tiny island has an L.D.S. Chapel. Wow! They are faithful Saints. Years ago, as they began to build their first chapel, they were stopped by the local Samoan leaders who told them they couldn't bring any supplies onto the island. Without sand for cement, and lumber they couldn't continue. The Saints fasted and prayed. One night there was a terrible storm, and the next morning, sand and lumber were washed ashore, right in front of the land where they wanted to build their chapel. What a blessing from the Lord. They were able to finish their falesa chapel.

What a cozy Primary room. The whole building has rooms, just like our church at home; only tiny.

They even have a baptismal font. This one is ifafo outside.

This island is so charming. The palm trees stand to guard the island against the ocean.

Pike wore her lava lava; played with it in the ocean, and used it to shade her head from the sun.

Most people walk on these foot paths. We saw one truck, the only vehicle all day.

After a day in Aunu'u, we headed back to catch our boat for Tutuila.

I just love this island. Everything about it. Moroni showed us some seeds that children gather to play marbles. When he was a child, if he met a playmate with glass marbles - wow, he was rich. Frankly, I like the seed marbles best.

Tutuila is Tops

I made a poster promoting 'health food heroes'. It was a lot of fun.

Ali began the Women's Community Action Group after the tsunami to help women raise their economic standard and learn about health and nutrition. For this event they joined WIC to promote good health. Melinda is on the board of directors.

These beautiful relish trays tasted as good as they looked.

Hundreds of people showed up at 7:00 on Saturday morning to begin their exercise training.

Ephraim, of the University of Hawaii faculty and Extension Agent of Sea Grant brought a tank to show Samoans how to raise tilapia to sell. What a great idea! Could I do this in Utah?

After attending each booth, your name went in a drawing to win this beautiful hand sewn quilt.

Ella is baiting fish with 'healthy foods'. They can only be caught with healthy foods like broccoli, carrots, and bananas. Fish don't like ice cream.

They redeemed their fish for a prize.

Prizes were in these treasure chests. Inside the junk food treasure chest were pictures of rotten teeth, germs, people with colds and such.

This darling girl loved to play all the games: matching healthy foods, bean bag toss, and the fish pond.

The Samoan lady on the left won the quilt. They also gave away a teddy bear and loaves of wheat bread.

NIGHT ON THE TOWN

Did you know there was a Mexican restaurant on the island? Yea! Chili's is here. It's in the Primary room. Europa, Vili, Elder DaBell, Robert, and Bro. Haretuku greeted those with reservations. Of course, we all had reservations to the ward social. Sina and Karen visited and enjoyed appetizers of chips and salsa.

Charlie and Dolores enjoyed a night at the only Mexican restaurant on Tutuila.

We even had servers. What a night out. The lights were dimmed, streamers waved from ceiling fans, chairs were tied with slip covers, tables were decorated with colorful flowers, and of course they played Mexican music.

Teuila and Tala are to be thanked for much of the work. The ambiance was amazing.

Tu'u and Norman enjoyed a night on the town.

Barbara enjoyed her first evening out after giving birth a month ago. I couldn't resist using the table decorations as my new se'i.

ELDER DABELL IS ONE YEAR OLDER

For Elder DaBell birthday, Pili's treated us to another evening at Goat Island Cafe. As we sat with such great company, by the sea, we felt again as if we were on holiday. What a treat!

Tafa surprised Elder DaBell by leading the class in Manuia le aso fanau, Happy Birthday to you.

It was quite a week of celebrating. Vili, and the Eve's, a senior missionary couple from Apia took us to Carl's Jr. for Elder DaBell's birthday AGAIN.

CONGRATULATIONS VALU AND SALA

We love Sister Pe'i. She works at Haleck's Bakery and came to Valu and Sala's wedding luncheon.

Sala has some of the best girl friends. They came to congratulate the new bride and groom.

We are so happy for them - Sala and Valu. We met Sala a year ago when she got baptized. We met Valu when he attended our Institute class just returning from his mission. We were thrilled to see them together a few months later. Now they are married. Congratulations!

TUTUILA TRULY IS TOPS We love Peresitene Muliselu, of the Mapusaga Stake. While we exercised at the Malaeimi church building he visited his Primary Stake Sports Activity.

We ran into Marjorie (named after Sister Hinckley) and her mother at Bank of Hawaii. We home teach this wonderful Tongan family.

Talo works at Triple SSS gas station. Her baptism records were lost so she got re-baptized. She was thrilled to make covenants with Heavenly Father again. We too, can do that each Sunday as we partake of the Sacrament.

Anna and Tuaoi visited us when we first arrived. They taught us some of their language and sang 'I Am a Child of God' in Samoan. We haven't seen them for almost a year. They have grown up to beautiful young ladies.

Saints walk home after church each week with their scriptures and hymn books in hand. Yes, each person owns their own hymn book. Elder DaBell visited with these fine members of our church, Zenas (left), and Epikopo (Bishop) of Pago Ward; after our Seminary and Institute training meeting. Four years ago Zenas' parents sent him to American Samoa after high school on a one way ticket (unknown to him) to meet his Samoan relatives. Unhappy at first, he now is grateful because he found a wife and the church. He just returned to his home in eastern United States with his new family and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

My long lost, new found friend - Sina, from Korea. She joined the church just over a year ago, and last month she and her husband went to the temple in Apia to be sealed together for time and all eternity.

One of the most beautiful look out points on the island - over Amanave. The tsunami hit this village last September wiping out many home and the church Sunday School. It's called a Sunday School because it isn't large enough to be a 'branch', and is under the direction of the mission instead of the 'stake'. For many months 60-80 saints met each week under a tent.

Sina and I walked and talked along the beach looking for shells. She told me about her life growing up by the sea in Korea.

Jonnie, our friend is trying to get to Seattle to be reunited with his family.

Hopefully it will all work out and he can go next month.

Rani and her mother picked and gave me this beautiful flower. Anandan's spoil us.

Lynn and her sweet friends played basketball with Elder DaBell. She is a wonderful missionary already. Last Christmas she shared the gospel with her 'world teach' teacher - gave them a Book of Mormon, a church video, and bore her testimony. The teachers have since moved home to the states yet she continues to pray for them.

Finally we met Lynn's entire family at the immigration office where they got entry permits to attend the temple in Apia.

We walked along the ocean and enjoyed the pisisami shoot up through the blow holes. Magnificent.

Our new van. What a beauty. The mission upgraded us from the yaris to this roomy sienna with only 30 miles on the odometer. The license plates say: motu o fiafiaga 'Island of Happiness.'

Biggest Transfer EVER

We see Elder Va'enuku walking everywhere. He showed his new Tongan companion, Elder Funaki around the island.

Elders Wells and Fuchs with Jane, their new baptized member. Her mother and siblings were baptized a month prior. Because of scheduling conflicts, she just finished her lessons. She is a sweetheart.

What mature missionaries we have. They are so grown up.

What's this? CRAZY, too.

More new missionaries. These young men are hot off the press - Elders Asa'asa, Faumuina, Levale, and Blazer. They came straight away from Provo MTC, flight was delayed in L.A., then rerouted through New Zealand. As soon as they arrived in Apia, they were sent to Tutuila. Now what time or day is it? Really? They gained a day, then lost a day.

The missionaries even transfer water. They bring empty jugs, Elder DaBell filters clean water, they take them to their fale full. Elders Davidson and Tauali'i took jugs to their East Zone.

Can you get that, Elder Tauali'i? It's H E A V Y.

The missionaries respectfully take their shoes off before entering. Elder Peck is putting his on as he leaves. Elder Wells and Ilo said goodbye the Samoan way.

Elder Peck just met his new companion; Elder Uta'i. What a companionship. They will do well.

Missionaries come and missionaries go. Elders Davidson, Tauali'i, Ilo, Fuchs, Peck, Wells, and DaBell.

Elders Tumanuvao and Johnson transferred. Elder Mangakahia came from being an A.P. to a Zone leader in Tutuila the last month of his mission.

We took Elder Malaeulu(right) to the dentist. He and his companion, Elder Fa'auliuli were great company. They sacrifice a lot to be on their missions. Elder Malaeulu's mother died while he prepared for his mission, and his father died last year while he was on his mission. Elder Fa'auliuli and his sister are the only members of the church in their family. They are learning English, just as we are trying to learn Samoan. We try and use the Samoan greetings as we come and go. When Elder Malaeulu left he said, "Have a nice day", and laughed and laughed. We love to be with them.

Elders Va'enuku and Su'a rested by the road side while waiting for us to pick up a letter to mail at the post office.

You can always tell who is traveling - the one wearing an ula (necklace). Tofa soifua Elder Tolley. Elders Tumanuvao, Tidermann, Beck, Johnson, Tolley, Mangakahia, and Dimmick.

We love the missionaries: Elders Foster, Peck, Wells, Dimmick, Austin, Beck, Davidson, DaBell and Larson. What a bunch of happy palagi's (white boys).

Elder DaBell said good bye to Elder Larson. He was in the MTC with us, and been on this island almost as long as we have. When we transfer the mail we have to think twice when letters and packages come for Elder Larson. We forget he is in Upolu.

Elder Tolley taught our Samoan language class for months. We progressed so much. Maybe he didn't see any progress, but he was an excellent teacher. Sometimes it took a while for words to stay in our old palagi heads. He color coded the words on the board, gave us many examples, knew ALL the answers to our questions, and did it with a smile.

Elders Tuala and Tolley are modeling the clothes Elder Tolley bought for his parents. He finished his mission and returned to Oregon. He was a great missionary.

Elders Barns and Johnson can both walk AND talk. Elder Johnson got transferred and we miss his polite and kind way.

Sister Toleafoa brought her new companion, Sister Maua'i over to meet us. They are delightful. Sisters get things done.

Looking for our ward at Lyon's Park

At Lyon's Park we came across these youth celebrating a birthday.

The next young lady is from Persia and has lived here three years. The last one sitting is Filipino and has lived here seven years. The young lady standing is palagi (white) but was born here. The young man is Korean and has lived here three years. What an international potpourri.

These ladies won their cricket championship; and were celebrating in the park.

Just when we didn't think we would ever find our ward members, we did. Sis. Temple was a welcome sight with her son Owen.

I fiafia (like) aiga buses

"Blessings," we have many.

"Praise The Lord" written on the side of the bus.

Many Samoans take aiga buses as their mode of transportation. They are owned, decorated, and operated by families and villages.

We went on board to visit this friendly bus driver. He willingly let us take his photo.

Families remember their loved ones by displaying them on their bus.

This skeleton bus is still around for all to remember it's better days.

This is a good reminder.
